Why not make handball an indirect free kick? For two main reasons: When a “handball” occurs during a promising attack in the attacking half of the field, just outside the penalty area, or in the penalty area, the results are very consequential. The attacking team should have the opportunity to score directly from the free kick should they choose.

Why not make handball an indirect free kick? Discussion. The main problem with the hand ball is the intent clause and this only applies in a very specific circumstance. If a the ball hits the hand of any attacker or somewhere in the midfield it is an automatic free kick regardless of intent. The offending team doesn't complain because they ...

At an indirect free-kick, the ball cannot be directly kicked into the goal. If this happens, the referee will award a goal-kick or corner-kick to the team that did not take the free-kick. In most circumstances, the referee will award a direct free-kick for a handball offense.
